3) They Want to Lower Their Overall Cost of Living

With the cost of living climbing in many areas, it’s no surprise that finding a more affordable spot is high on the list. 21.6% of movers will be looking for budget-friendly options where they can thrive without draining their wallets.

4) They Want Lower Rent or Housing Prices

Whether you rent or own, housing prices can feel like a moving target—one that’s often out of reach. For 17.6% of people surveyed, finding a place with more reasonable rental or home prices is a top priority in 2025.

5) They’re Concerned About Crime and Safety

17.5% of the respondents plan on moving because they’re concerned for their safety and want to get away from crime.

6) They Want to Live With, or Be Closer to Family

Whether they’re helping out elderly parents, needing support, or just looking to spend more time with loved ones, it’s all about being closer to family for 14% of movers.

7) To Get Away From Climate or Weather Related Disasters

Natural disasters like wildfires, hurricanes, and floods are pushing people to reconsider where they live. 13.7% of movers are trading disaster-prone areas for locations that offer stability—and fewer evacuation drills.

8) They Want Lower Property Taxes

Property taxes can be a major expense, so it’s no surprise that 11.0% are searching for places where they’re lower.

9) There’ve Been Changes in Their Family

Family changes like new babies, marriage, divorce, or the loss of a loved one often mean it’s time to move. While you can’t foresee or plan for many of these things, 10.3% of those surveyed already know that changes in their family will be the reason they move in the coming year.

10) They Want Better Weather

For some people, it’s all about finding better weather. Whether it’s warmer weather and sunny days, or longer winters and more snow for people who love to ski, 9% of people moving in the next year are looking for climates that match their idea of paradise.

On her website, Houghton explains that she believes in “celebrating everything in a big way,” which is a bit of an understatement. Offering home decorating ideas and inspiration, Houghton has 435,000 followers on Instagram, and her Pinterest board receives more than 800,000 monthly views.

While some may view the rooms as a bit over-the-top, even if it’s not your taste, you have to admire the devotion and hours that go into these creations.
