Being funny isn’t a job requirement for real estate agents, but it certainly makes the process of buying or selling a house more entertaining for their clients when they do!
But whether an agent has a natural knack for one-liners or not, the skills an agent picks up in their home selling career could easily translate into hacking it as a stand-up comedian…
Here are six reasons why real estate agents have what it takes to moonlight as stand-up comedians:
1) Their Careers Give Them Lots of Material
Stand-up comedians often use their everyday lives as fodder for their comedy routine, turning even something awful or awkward that happened into a relatable laugh.
Real estate agents have a treasure trove of these moments, just begging to be shared. In real estate, you learn quickly that if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry. Finding humor in life’s twists and turns is practically a job requirement, making them naturals at finding the punchline in everyday situations.
2) They’re Prepared to Handle Hecklers
Stand-up comedians need to be able to not just ignore a heckler in the crowd, but also engage with them, and ideally put them in their place so they’ll stop.
Whether it’s meeting a new client who just isn’t a fan of real estate agents, or dealing with the overprotective dad of a client, agents are used to diplomatically defusing an ornery person with grace… and sometimes a little humor.
3) They Have Good Timing
A comedian’s joke can absolutely bomb if they don’t have the right timing and delivery!
An agent could easily transition from hitting deadlines to delivering killer punchlines. From timing their schedule, to the words they say during a negotiation, or making sure that deadlines are met, agents are masters of timing!
4) They’re Used to Working Late at Night
Comedians would have a tough time selling out shows if they performed them during normal working hours — they hit the stage when many people hit the bed!
Long hours and late nights come with the territory when you’re a real estate agent. Not only do they often work seven days a week, they’ll work ‘til the wee hours of the night doing paperwork after coming home from several evening appointments with clients. Heck, doing a comedy set would be an easy night for many agents!
5) They Know It Can Take Time to Build a Following
Comedians don’t get their own Netflix special overnight, and many never get one. Only those who have a ton of fans get their own show, and it takes doing a lot of shows for smaller audiences before they do.
Agents understand the grind, the persistence, and the patience needed to build a loyal following. It can take an agent years of doing only grinding out a few sales per year before they start getting enough referrals and word-of-mouth business for them to feel the sweet taste of success.
