His Back Yard Was A Literal Trash Dump… Until He Had An Epic Idea

Back yards serve many purposes. A place for your pets to run around and take care of their needs, playscapes for children (big and small), and a relaxing area to unwind and hang out with friends. Unfortunately, not all back yards are created equal. Good thing that your back yard is yours to do whatever you want with.

Imgur user “Arnotts83” chose to take on the challenge of turning this back yard into something he could enjoy with friends. With some hard work and ingenuity, his results are nothing short of inspiring.

I present to you, the disaster zone.

the area when I bought the house

First task was to clear out the debris. He had to bring in a bobcat for the job. A great deal of dirt was removed.

much easier than shovelling. 20m3 of soil is removed

He had to be careful because of the electric cable. His managers kept a close eye on things.

the excavated area. the skid steer loader dug up the electrical cable to the shed. only the conduit was damaged luckily

The perimeter was built with limestone blocks. I’m sure he got quite a workout moving this many 500x350x200mm bricks.

laying the natural limestone blocks. 500x350x200mm

He used a wet yellow sponge to tidy up the mortar spaces.

Here we see the superintendent making sure everything goes according to plan. (Couldn’t leave this photo out)

Penny happy with mess she gets to play in

The sitting area was coming together. The bench supports were built from H4 stumps and 70x45mm H3 pine frame.

Recycled jarrah (that’s a fun word) wood was used to construct the seating.

I wanted the boards to join at random lengths

The “screwing off” was completed (his words, not mine). Looking great!

screwing off complete! it rained during the job so no oiling until it dries

Looks like the superintendent approves.

She already claimed it as her own

The oil gloss will give it quite the stylish finish.

It’s starting to come together nicely.

wow factor starting to appear

Some limestone blocks were used as a shallow border to contain the flooring.

installed some smaller blocks to border the pit

The final touch was adding the pebble rocks and firepit.

complete! added some corten steel edging in a 1x1m square and installed a cast iron bowl. stones are from a local quarry

Now that is a transformation! Time to call over friends and family and let the good times roll on!
