Moving doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, most people start thinking about moving years in advance of actually packing up the moving truck. People need time to think through when and where they’ll move to.
But no matter where or when someone moves, there’s always something that’s driving them to do so. Moving isn’t just about finding a new home—it’s about chasing a better life, whether that means more space, less stress, or finally escaping that neighbor who mows their lawn at 6 a.m. (We’re talking about you, Tony.)
While everyone has their own unique reasons for moving, a recent survey uncovered the top reasons why people are planning to move in 2025. Here’s a look at the top 10:
Whether it’s a growing family, a new hobby, or simply outgrowing the current setup, the need for more space tops the list in 2025 with 31.2% of those surveyed citing it as their reason.
Moving isn’t just about a bigger home; sometimes, it’s about a better one. For 25.4% of movers, the dream of a more stylish space or a neighborhood with better amenities is the reason to pack their bags in 2025.
With the cost of living climbing in many areas, it’s no surprise that finding a more affordable spot is high on the list. 21.6% of movers will be looking for budget-friendly options where they can thrive without draining their wallets.
Whether you rent or own, housing prices can feel like a moving target—one that’s often out of reach. For 17.6% of people surveyed, finding a place with more reasonable rental or home prices is a top priority in 2025.
17.5% of the respondents plan on moving because they’re concerned for their safety and want to get away from crime.
Whether they’re helping out elderly parents, needing support, or just looking to spend more time with loved ones, it’s all about being closer to family for 14% of movers.
Natural disasters like wildfires, hurricanes, and floods are pushing people to reconsider where they live. 13.7% of movers are trading disaster-prone areas for locations that offer stability—and fewer evacuation drills.
Property taxes can be a major expense, so it’s no surprise that 11.0% are searching for places where they’re lower.
Family changes like new babies, marriage, divorce, or the loss of a loved one often mean it’s time to move. While you can’t foresee or plan for many of these things, 10.3% of those surveyed already know that changes in their family will be the reason they move in the coming year.
For some people, it’s all about finding better weather. Whether it’s warmer weather and sunny days, or longer winters and more snow for people who love to ski, 9% of people moving in the next year are looking for climates that match their idea of paradise.
